The MERK331 Foundation was inspired by tragedy and a blessing. On March 31, 2012, Gregg Merkel experienced a near fatal motorcycle crash in Missouri. First responders arrived, assessed, and requested an airlift to a trauma center to treat many serious injuries. Over the next 2 years, Gregg had 11 surgeries, spent 4 months in a wheelchair, and had 18 months of physical therapy. The collective medical expenses were well over one million dollars and included a $46,000 helicopter ride. At the time of the accident, Gregg worked for a company that provided good health insurance and supported him through his recovery. Even though his insurance covered most of his medical expenses, the helicopter ride was considered “Out of Network” and not covered. With significant financial hardship looming over Gregg and his family, his employer stepped up and graciously covered that expense 100%. Six years later Gregg is humbled by all the support he had during this life-changing event. His story is not uncommon but does not commonly have the same successful conclusion. His blessing of having a circle of support has inspired him to give to others and MERK331 was founded.
